** For a info on pet foods NOT recently recalled go to The Pet Food List **

Pet parents are reporting problems with Nutro dry foods. Because the dry foods they bought were not on any recall list, people felt safe feeding them to their pets. However, some have reported serious illness and even death, and attribute it to the food.

FDA stops the import of Chinese toothpaste.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The government is stopping all imports of Chinese toothpaste to test for a deadly chemical reportedly found in tubes sold elsewhere in the world.

The Food and Drug Administration is testing the Chinese toothpaste for diethylene glycol, a chemical commonly used in antifreeze and brake fluid, spokesman Doug Arbesfeld said Thursday. The imports will be released only if they test negative for the chemical.

The FDA began the tests following reports that tainted Chinese toothpaste was sold in Australia, the Dominican Republic and Panama, Arbesfeld said.

I don’t quite understand this. The government is willing to entirely stop all imports of Chinese toothpaste but they can’t do the same for other products that are tainted with melamine? Is it just me or does this make no sense whatsoever? Come on, FDA, what’s up with this?

I used to use Nutro before the recall. Now I home cook.
But My cat has been haviang a lot of hairballs/vomiting.
I give him Petromalt paste, but it doesn’t work as well as the anti hairball dry foods. I no longer use commercial food. What can I do about the hairballs please?
Thanks

Since 1975 we rescued more than 400 Rottweilers in California and Nevada. Nutro has been our food of choice and occasionally, when we noticed a change in formula we switched to Nature’s Recipe.

Since the pet food contamination I began feeding my Rotts Nature’s Recipe. Their ingredient listing appears clean of contaminant. I also noticed healthier looking feces.

FYI, consider Nature’s Recipe.

Check into Natura Which makes Innova,Evo and California Natural. They have never been on the recall list and they have their own manufacturing plant and are in control of all products that go into their foods.

msbrome, Halo makes an oil supplement called DreamCoat, and I’ve found it to be helpful for keeping hairballs under control. Just add the oil to the cat’s food — mine thought it tasted quite good. You can buy the oil online, and I’ve also seen it in Smith’s/Kroger grocery stores.

In addition, I’ve read that you can try olive oil, pumpkin, etc. There are quite a few homemade recipes and suggestions on this page (hope it’s okay if I post a link): http://www.holisticat.com/hairball_arch1.html

As for how to avoid hairballs, I think the only foolproof solution is to brush, brush, brush!
